FRONT END QUESTION |
Lead | |
|
Ok, have a question for anyone that wants to take a stab at it. I see two styles of front ends on these cars at the track. One is a traditional a-arm front end
with an upper and lower a a-arm kind of like a street car. The other I will call the pro chassis front end, this is the car I have seen this front end on. This
front end is more like the Legend car front end I am used too. It consist of trailing arms coming back to the chassis at an angle to the frame rails from the
upper and lower a-arms. Know my question is, what makes one better than the other? Its looks as if the Pro Chassis front end you might be able to adjust more
than the other but I am not sure of this. Anyone care to help out with some ideas.

Bill.
I used to run the A frame uppers but last year i recliped my front end on my now 14 year old chasis.. I did a link system like the pro's except i use a ball joint. The reson i whent to the links is time and ease of making changes. A frames you ither have to shim or un-screw and twist in or out the heims to change caster camber now i lossen two nuts and twist the bar all with car on the ground and quickly measure using my angle finder on the back side of the brake disk. 44Dwarf

Hi Bill,
My build is using the a-arm suspension. Only because that is my choice. It's what I understand best. I think Dwarf44 brings up the best point for using the "Pro" approach. And yes, I do think that it is more easily adjusted. jmho Steve |

Steve, are you going to use ball joints on your a-arm set up? If you are where are you going to get them and what size are you going to use?
Thanks Greg |

I'm using the old steel spindles from a Legends Car. Got some of the ball joints with the spindles and bought 6 more off eBay.
I'm not sure of the size. 600 Racing has the new aluminum spindles and ball joints. They are larger than the ball joints for the steel spindles though. Steve |

a-arm vs strut style | ||

my opinion is that the a arm suspension is the way to go there is less binding and the suspension is free to travel, strut style suspensions seem to bind once
the hymes run out of travel. Todays late models are getting away from these strut suspensions because of limited travel.

That is one of the resons i stay with a ball joint at the spindel good ball joints have up to 38 deg while hiems have 20 or so. I can travel 7.6 inches with
out bind i run 6 inch shocks.

Hi,
Just figured I would inform you of my trials with the A Frame type suspension. We tried it on our cars for a few years now. I love the adjustment abilities it gives you as far as changing the roll center and being able to work well with room inbetween the shocks. I find it really useful. The only flaw I saw is that in accidents of anysorts even the slightest bit of bump we were bending the hiem joints and the a frame would hit and bend the shock. If you can find a way to avoid this I personally highly recommend the a frame style suspension. Andrew Mod Lite #9 |

Since the subject came up, I want to use the upper/lower a-arm setup since the mounts are already on my frame. Is there anywhere they can be bought, or do
they have to be made? I have no idea how wide if I had to make them because I have no front suspension and doing it from scratch. The upper is 10" on
center but I don't know how far out to put them with my chevette spindles.
