dwarfcar vs. modlite |

|
I've been watching the car counts with clubs that have switched to modlites from classics. The classic clubs seem to have held their members and counts up for the most part. Modlite clubs appear to grow and decline in just one or 2 seasons. I believe it is mainly due to classic owners being fed-up with the changing rules to accomadate the "new cars and members", while nothing is being done to accomadate the old classics. Not long ago, there were classics racing in SE MO. The class was not huge in number, but consistant at 12 to 16 cars. Last year, I went to a race at PBS. There were 18 cars total(including myself), with 2 classics. I went to the "TUSA" regional this year at PBS, and there were only 10 cars and no classics. I think if something is done to accomadate all the old cars that are sitting around, you "may" be able to get them back on the track. We experimented with our club rules to allow "old" classics(not brats) a break on tire choice, as long as everything else fit with the current 2007 TUSA rules. I'm the only one that took advantage this. I run a carbed 1164cc Kawasaki, with 10 bolt rear, inframe suspension, a-arms and chevette spindles, and no special items like brake bias or QC. This was a winning car in 1996-2000 with a ZX11 at 1109cc's. With our club's exception rule on tires, I went with AR's that are nomally used on midgets. It makes a huge difference to an old car. Basically... all I did was mount a different motor in place(bolt in swap) and went from Hoosier mediums to the American Racer. It made an "out-of-date" relic, a competitive race car. Just a thought for all those modlite clubs that want to bring back all those "dwarfcars" that are collecting more dust than track time. I'm not guaranteeing any miracles, but my car has increased the "interest" in our class, but I'm still a loner among modlites. If it were not for the exception of the tire rule for classics, I wouldn't be racing modlites. For those that believe that every single car matters for counts, then this may be something to consider.

Merritsville speedway is a perfect example of how both types of cars can race together in harmony. You have to ask yourself how long are Chevette and Toyota parts from the 1970's and 80's going to be reasonably priced. Nice picture by the way , love the wing.Perhaps the title should read Classic-Mods & Mod-lites in harmony.

Steve, We at ironically to the post above from California our track is called MERRITTVILLE speedway in Ontario Canada and we run modlite and classics together and never had a field under 24 this year. The classics have a any tire rule and can run any motor as well within our own clubs engine rules. We have some very successful classics at our track and in fact 05 and 06 track champion was a classic. So I agree with you that for something so simple to allow them to use the tire on a true classic not brat then you should hopefully see more car counts maybe go up. We unfortunatley we just dont seem to get enough respect from the track we run at. The are good to us but most everynight we have the highest car count of the 5 divisions and still make the crappy money.

I believe the "payout" situation is pretty much the same every where. We have the same problem at our "home" track. We'd be the only class with more than 1 field of heat races at times, yet we still got the least in purse. I think it is largely due to the fact that many dwarf/modlite racers show up in the pits as 1 driver and 1 car, while most others will bring a pit crew of 1 or more. That's extra $$$$ for the track. Our purse has been getting a "little" better at the end of the season, because we've been travelling to different tracks around the state. Seems more tracks are interested when they don't see the same cars week after week.

Sling, I think you are talking about Marysville, up north of Sacramento.

Naw I was thinking the Empire state club that races back east.At Merritsville (SP) Our Club out here as it stands would never allow such a thing. We would have to travel to southern Oregon speedway or Arizona. We could also form our own series, 450 to win certainly brightens eyes. We have lots of classic mods and there would be nothing good in ruining that. but time marches on and you never know what we might be racing, hell it could be C***** before long around here.

Hey Sling I think you are thinking of our track in St Catherines ontario that is Merrittville Speedway owned by Pete Bicknell and family. We run our NYDCA races there but you are correct that we allow any tire for classics and they run well against the modlites.

Florida Open Wheel Lites run the mod-lites and the classics together on asphalt. All run the same tires but have a weight difference in the mods and the classics. Looks that some people have lost interest and would rather sit ata home than run their cars. Must have big garages !!!!!!!! I like to brong mine out to play every chance I get. It seems to be true that at a few tracks we bring out the largest car counts but get the lowest purse. Come on down this winter and keep your cars running in the Florida Sunshine, Running every month during the winter!!!!!!!!!!
